25 years ago: June 28, 1985

The pilot of a single-engine plane felt winds at 11,000 feet over Cape Girardeau yesterday afternoon several minutes before they kicked up in Cape Girardeau and was forced to land his six-seat private aircraft at the municipal airport; the force of the wind popped open the door and sent charts flying around the cockpit; pilot Grady Persons held the door with one hand and landed the plane.

Jack L. Mehner, president of Advance Business Systems, has been installed as the new president of the Cape Girardeau Lions Club, succeeding August R. Meyer.

50 years ago: June 28, 1960

Demolition work by a railroad wrecking crew on the Frisco passenger depot on Main Street has begun; a crane equipped with a 1,500-pound piledriver weight is being used to smash apart the 40-year-old brick structure.

Gene Sides, co-owner of the Sides-Miller men's store, is the new president of the Cape Girardeau Rotary Club.

75 years ago: June 28, 1935

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- X.O. Ray, president of the Chamber of Commerce, announces the campaign to raise a fund of $3,500 to assure operation of a pants factory here is nearing a successful conclusion; most of the money for the bonus asked by Oscar Buckstein, head of the company, has either been paid in or pledged.

C.T. Frick and E.J. Davies are in Cape Girardeau as they take over management of the traffic bridge; the two represent Industrial Securities Inc. of Toledo, Ohio, and the Ozark Trails Bridge Co.; the former bid in the span and all assets of the company, then shortly before title was transferred Thursday from the Cape Girardeau Bridge Co. and the receivership, assigned the successful bid to the Ozark Trails company.

100 years ago: June 28, 1910

Sunday afternoon's downpour was a bad one; the rain fell so fiercely that Cape Girardeau's sewers and gutters were unable to carry off the surface water; all streets having a down grade became torrents of rushing waters; wood blocks from the new street paving on Broadway were torn up and washed toward the Mississippi River.

Architect J.B. Blackwood of St. Louis is here, having perfected the plans for a new residence for Dr. W.E. Yount on North Frederick Street, the foundation of which has already been started.
