Cape Girardeau man drowned yesterday trying to rescue 5-year-old boy at Trail of Tears State Park; Ronald C. Overbey, 27, was pronounced dead at scene; youngster was uninjured.

Dan Niswonger is only patron of Pop's Pizza wearing hospital bracelet; after being discharged from St. Francis Medical Center in afternoon, Niswonger and his family head over to his favorite pizza place, where fund-raising dinner is held to honor Cape Girardeau police officer.

25 years ago: June 28, 1979

Three-point proposal of conditions city must meet before 145 protesting city employees return to work is presented to city manager W.G. Lawley, who says he will take injunctive action against city firefighters engaged in work stoppage; he says latest proposal will be presented to city council, but he doesn't know when.

By unanimous vote in executive session, regent Kenneth L. Dement is elected to serve as president of Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents, succeeding James E. Estes, who has served in capacity of acting board president.

50 years ago: June 28, 1954

Mr. and Mrs. Lyall E. Carver of Cape Girardeau have purchased Watson floral shop, South Sprigg and Merriwether streets, and assume active duty of shop today; business was formerly owned and operated by Howard Watson, who opened store last January; new business is known as Carver's Floral Shop.

Near tragedy at Capaha Park swimming pool has happy ending for Cape Girardeau youth; Bobby Turlin, 11, is saved from downing by Charlie I. Uhr, who pulls unconscious boy from water and pumps life back into him; his efforts are aided by Rodger Rogers, 12, of Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: June 28, 1929

Sister Philibert of St. Andrews Hospital at Murphysboro, Ill., is new sister superior of St. Francis Hospital, succeeding Sister Bona-venture, who has been transferred to St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Louis; she had been superior here four years.

Establishing new record for paving operations in this district, Rouse Construction Co. lays 1,400 linear feet of 20-foot-wide pavement on Highway 61 west of Cape Girardeau; record operation is accomplished from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., by using nine "double-batch" motor trucks to transport materials from mixer and weigher at Broadway junction of highway just west of city limits.
