25 years ago: June 26, 1984

The entire Jackson city block on which the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. is located has been offered for sale to the Cape Girardeau Court for $485,000; court members, who have been studying options for expanding county office space for several months, took the offer under advisement.

The city of Cape Girardeau has collected $175,687.26 in hotel/motel and restaurant gross receipts taxes for the first five months of this year; the city council has agree to allocate $75,000 of the tax revenue to the new convention and tourism bureau.

50 years ago: June 26, 1959

James Wyndham, 18, of Bend Road, narrowly escaped serious injury yesterday when he fell 10 feet and landed across two angle irons while working at the Missouri Dry Dock; he sustained only bruises and abrasions across his back and ankles.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl A. Lorimier and son, Neal Lorimier, are making plans to move from Cape Girardeau to Las Vegas; it will leave the city without a Lorimier for possibly the first time since it was founded by Don Louis Lorimier.

75 years ago: June 26, 1934

The building at 515 Broadway, which formerly housed the Talent Barber Shop, has lost its front; the inside is being painted green, and shelves are being installed by Charles Edmonds, who will operate a fruit market there; the front of the building was torn away, leaving all of the interior exposed; Edmonds is renting the place from James Laskaris.

For the 12th consecutive day, temperatures in Cape Girardeau go higher than 90 degrees; the high relative humidity is increasing the suffering of locals.

100 years ago: June 26, 1909

Reports from Hubble Creek between Gordonville and Dutchtown advise of a hard rain and wind storm in that vicinity last evening, which blew down wheat shocks and tore up growing crops, leveled fences and uprooted trees.

An election has been called for next Tuesday that will allow Jackson voters to decide whether to acquire the Jackson Military Academy property for high school purposes; they have a chance to get the fine building and grounds, with school furnishings and laboratory, for $4,600.
