An isolated, slow-moving thunderstorm yesterday afternoon dumped about 1 1/2 inches of rain in the central business district of Cape Girardeau, temporarily flooding some major street intersections along Broadway and Independence Street.

Arguments pro and con have been heard, and tomorrow Cape Girardeau voters will have their say on the future of public housing here; specifically, the election will decide "yes" or "no" on the passage of a valid cooperation agreement between the city and the local housing authority.

Two outboard motorboats rammed together in the Mississippi River, about 150 feet out from the Broadway landing, Saturday afternoon; one of the pilots, Clarence R. Heflen of Cape Girardeau, was sent to the hospital with a broken leg and large lacerations.

75 years ago: June 25, 1937

A reduction in the number of Works Progress employees will be made between July 1 and 15; at present there are 250 workers -- 212 men and 38 women -- in Cape Girardeau County.

The Bartels store on Broadway promises to be the surprise of surprises when the interior renovation, which was started yesterday, is completed; a merchandising architect is in charge of the work; Bartels has been located in the former Montgomery Ward building, since fire destroyed its original location at Broadway and Ellis Street.

100 years ago: June 25, 1912

The graves of Louis Lorimier and his wife in the old cemetery will be decorated with flowers tomorrow afternoon by ladies of the Daughters of the Revolution and others to mark the centennial of the city founder's death; little Helen Uhl, a descendant of Lorimier, will take part in decorating the graves; in the evening, a program will be held at Courthouse Park honoring Lorimier.

The well-known drugstore of W.C. Haman & Co., owned by Haman and W.C. Patton, has been sold to Dr. J.W. Berry and Harvey C. Jones of St. Louis; Haman and Patton have been conducting their pharmacy for the past 15 years.
