Because of the potential economic impact on Southeast Missouri and the possibility of closing the Noranda Aluminum plant in Marston, Mo., Rep. Bill Emerson opposes the Acid Rain Bill, which is pending before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Steve Williams, former Cape Girardeau Central High and Southeast Missouri State University standout, has been promoted from the Philadelphia Phillies' Class A minor-league affiliate in Clearwater, Fla., to the Portland (Ore.) Beavers of the Class AAA Pacific Coast Association.

50 years ago: June 25, 1961

Aviation Day at Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport activities bring out what airport officials and police estimate as the largest crowd ever present at the field; the crowd, surpassing even that of the airport dedication last summer, is estimated at close to 10,000.

Probably one of Cape Girardeau's oldest residents, William A. Moore, 90, dies at his home here; Moore, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Moore of Washington, D.C., was born Jan. 1, 1871, at the home of his grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Alfred Peironnet of this city.

75 years ago: June 25, 1936

Mayor Charles G. Wilson announces receipt of a letter inviting him to arrange for a Cape Girardeau Day at a Cardinals baseball game in St. Louis; he is given a number of dates in July and August and asked to select one.

With construction of 23 blocks of city streets definitely assured, Cape Girardeau may have one of its best years in street improvements; these projects are being financed with WPA funds at an approximate cost of $75,000 and involve the development of two suburban areas.

100 years ago: June 25, 1911

Jesse "Squirlie" Hawn has a bit of hard luck while playing baseball at Chaffee, Mo.; while playing third base for the Cape Girardeau Blue Boys, a Chaffee player slides into him, landing on Hawn's ankle with such force that it breaks; the Blue Boys are off their game, losing 10-1.

The Jungle Giants lose a game they might have won, if the baseball hadn't gotten lost at the wrong time; playing on an improvised diamond at Burfordville, and with the score tied at four, a Burfordville player slugs the ball so hard it lands in a nearby creek, where it's abandoned after a one-hour search.
