Cape Girardeau County circuit judges Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr. and A.J. Seier have turned down a request by county prosecuting attorney Morley Swingle for the formation of a standing grand jury; the judges believe such a body is unnecessary, because no long delays exist at the magistrate level here.

Jennifer Rogers of Scott City was crowned Miss Summer Teen last night at the Scott City Mid Summer Festival, held at the Community Park.

1964

Cape Girardeau's annual American Legion Fourth of July Picnic will again be highlighted by stock car races, fireworks and a carnival, says picnic chairman George E. Yallaly Jr.; the Legion has been hosting the celebration for about 40 years.

Dennis Musgraves, Missouri University pitcher who recently signed a $100,000 contract with the New York Mets, formerly lived in Cape Girardeau and still has relatives here.

1939

Working on the belief that production of oil in commercial quantities is certain to come to Southeast Missouri in the future, G.G. Hill of Dexter, Missouri, and O.F. Sitze of Cape Girardeau have leased 50,000 acres of land in New Madrid, Scott, Mississippi, Bollinger and Stoddard counties; the land has been prepared in blocks suitable for drilling contracts.

The main building of St. Vincent's College is undergoing a thorough renovation, work which will require another month to complete; all of the old stucco exterior finish is being removed from the red brick, and the building will be painted a light buff or tan; the interior is also being redecorated and renovated throughout; Anton Haas is doing the work.

Thomas M. Williams is not only running the new Freeze threshing machine factory here, but he is selling the machines faster than they can be turned out; the new plant isn't in full running order yet, but nevertheless four machines have been sold in the past week.

W.J. Koecher, the well-known blacksmith on North Spanish Street, just north of the Baptist church, was overcome by heat yesterday afternoon while at work in his shop; for a time it was feared he wouldn't recover, but late last night a change for the better came; he is now doing nicely.
