WASHINGTON — Cape Girardeau lawyer Stephen N. Limbaugh sailed through a confirmation hearing yesterday on his nomination to become a federal judge; he received accolades from Republican senators John C. Danforth of Missouri and Chic Hecht of Nevada, a former Cape Girardeau resident.

The Family Learning Center of Cape Girardeau announces the hiring of a new director, Susan Keller Schonhoff; the center is a not-for-profit agency committed to both the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect.

50 years ago: June 23, 1958

Under the direction of Mrs. Mike Brogan of Benton, Mo., and Mrs. Robert Erlbacher of Cape Girardeau, day camp for 155 Brownies opens in Dennis Scivally Park, with girls attending from Benton, Cape Girardeau and Chaffee, Mo.

A formal protest will be filed by the city with the Missouri Public Service Commission to Missouri Utilities Co.'s application to increase its water rates in Cape Girardeau to bring in 43 percent more revenue; Mayor Walter H. Ford will ask for the opportunity to appear when a public hearing is conducted.

75 years ago: June 23, 1933

The hot weather has a firm grip on Cape Girardeau; it shows no sign of letting up after setting a record high of 101 degrees yesterday.

The Cape Girardeau plant of Marquette Cement Mfg. Co., steps up to capacity operation, with 400 men at work, following the announcement that the company has been awarded a $2,880,000 cement contract by the Illinois State Highway Department; this is an increase of 150 men over those who went back to work a month ago.

100 years ago: June 23, 1908

Contractor Mullins of Kansas City arrived in Cape Girardeau yesterday to see that the big job of getting the sewer work started was done properly; he found a ditch had been started well on Merriwether Street near Lorimier Street.

If a guarantee of $300 plus expenses can be put up, the famous Cardinals of St. Louis can be enticed to play in Cape Girardeau; the Cardinals, famous in that they have clung to the bottom rung of the National League longer than any other team, would play the Capahas in August or September.
