An early morning fire heavily damages a tavern and beauty salon on East Second Street in Scott City; the blaze starts in the Keg Lounge and spreads to B and D Hair Fashions; both buildings are gutted, and the roofs of both collapse.

75 years ago: June 23, 1932

Cape Girardeau Mayor Edward L. Drum, after conferring with a committee representing the Parent-Teacher Council, says that an ordinance providing for employment of a woman probation officer for the city will be drafted; this officer would be a social worker and look after the moral interests of boys and girls of Cape Girardeau, with duties similar to those of a police matron.

A new well has been drilled at the Knaup Floral Co., 136 S. Pacific St., in Cape Girardeau, by John Knaup; it was drilled 85 feet deep and replaces an old one which was 60 feet deep.

100 years ago: June 23, 1907

The Cape Girardeau Capahas meet defeat at Perryville, Mo.; at the close of nine interesting innings, the score stands 7-6 in favor of the Perry County boys.

The Normal School catalogues for the coming term, which will soon be distributed, will announce a new music department that will prove of much value to the musical circles of Cape Girardeau; the Normal has secured the services of Nora Naeter to teach piano and violin, and this new department is now to be made a permanent one.
