After 18 months, Terry Risko has resigned as director of Cape Girardeau Public Library in what library directors call "amicable separation; Risko says circumstances during past four months led to his departure.

25 years ago: June 23, 1977

Two University of Missouri Extension Service officers in this area will lose their jobs year from now because of budget cuts made by Legislature in recent session; they are Will Wade, who is based at Jackson, and Gene Haenni, based in Cape Girardeau; Wade deals with community-public sector relationship in seven-county district; Haenni works in field of continuing education at Southeast Missouri State University.

Reaction by one group of city employees is positive after meeting with City Manager W.G. Lawley to discuss recommendations he is making for 9.1 percent total payroll increase; Street Department representatives say they are pleased with recommendation, which include an across-the-board pay increase of $360 per year.

50 years ago: June 23, 1952

Fred H. Bruihl suffers broken vertebrae, broken arm, broken pelvis and sprained wrist about noon when he falls from ladder in house he is building on his farm two miles north of Oak Ridge; Bruihl was climbing down step ladder into cellar of house to see how some newly-poured concrete had set; ladder pitched and he fell about six feet to floor; Bruihl managed to crawl out of cellar, get into his car and drive home, where family called ambulance to take him to Cape Girardeau hospital.

Neal Lorimier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lorimier of Cape Girardeau, was one of three Boy Scouts, direct descendants of Louis Lorimier, who participated in wreath-placing ceremony at Lorimier grave Saturday; ceremony was part of rededication service which followed repairs at tomb and cemetery; other scouts were Robert and Donald Jueneman of Cheyenne, Wyo.

75 years ago: June 23, 1927

Cape Girardeau boy bicyclists are "burning up" paved highway south of city these days getting in shape for bicycle marathon which will be run Wednesday as one of features of Optimist Club's boys' week; bicycles have suddenly become popular again, and long-distance riding has become a fad.

Both opposition and support of proposed $120,000,000 bond issue to complete Missouri road system is expressed at Southeast Missouri road meeting in evening at Hotel Idan-Ha; opposition comes from Col. C.D. Matthews of Sikeston, chairman of Missouri Highway Commission, who, speaking as private citizens, says plan would interfere with completion of secondary road system in state; John Malang of Joplin, good roads booster, speaks in favor of issue.
