Lawyer Edwin E. Calvin, speaking before the county Board of Equalization yesterday, said, "Chateau Girardeau is not now and never has been a residency facility for wealthy people," and that it shouldn't be included on the tax rolls because it is a "charitable" entity operated by a not-for-profit corporation.
The Cape Girardeau City Council has approved an ordinance allowing a Southeast Missouri State University fraternity to rent a house on Broadway; it clears the way for a special-use permit to be issued to John and Jessie Wescoat allowing them to rent the house at 1202 Broadway to the Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity.
Construction of two new bridges on U.S. 61 between Cape Girardeau and Jackson is expected to start early in July; the bridges will cost $163,080 and will span Cape LaCroix Creek and Williams Creek.
Scott City voters have approved a liquor-by-the-drink measure; the vote became necessary when Fornfelt and Ancell merged into Scott City; Fornfelt had voted open saloons in 1934, soon after the Eighteenth Amendment was repealed.
Skeet shooting equipment has been ordered for the Hillcrest Golf Club, and it is expected the traps will be ready for shooting to begin in less than two weeks; the grounds will be on land leased by Otto Vogt, a short distance north of the New Brown Owl on U.S. 61, and across the highway from the golf course.
ST. LOUIS -- The Cape Girardeau traffic bridge, which opened in 1928, passes into private hands; Federal Judge Charles B. Faris enters a formal order in the morning transferring the bridge to the Industrial Securities Co. of Toledo, Ohio, a private financing firm which bid in the span for $850,000 at a public sale April 8.
After several years of waiting, it appears the Sixth Regiment Band will play a series of concerts here; the City Council doesn't have the money now to build a fine bandstand in Courthouse Park, so an inexpensive platform will likely be used for now.
The County Court orders $25 to be issued to the ladies of the Cape Girardeau cemetery association for fixing the paupers' graves here.
