Chief deputy Leonard Hines will take over as Cape Girar-deau County sheriff on Aug. 1, when resignation of Sheriff Norman Copeland becomes effective; Hines, 20-year veteran of law enforcement, was unanimously appointed interim sheriff Monday by county commission.

City of Cape Girardeau is notified it will receive two housing grants from Missouri Department of Economic Development; grant for entire two-year project is $734,000, and it will aid Locust-Maple Neighborhood Restoration Project.

25 years ago: June 21, 1979

Continual problem of sewage backing into basements at two locations in city was brought to city council's attention last night; petitions from residents in area of Ranchito and Meadow Lane, and from persons living along Rodney Vista urged city to do something about problem, which they said has existed for number of years.

Cape Girardeau firefighters dispute city manager W.G. Lawley's claim that firefighters receive average annual gross salary of $12,500; Capt. David Suttles, vice president of Local 1084 of International Association of Firefighters, says figure is $11,856.45, not including salary of fire chief Charles Mills.

50 years ago: June 21, 1954

Petition asking for one of most extensive concrete paving projects in number of years reaches city council and is accepted, although it appears likely that work under terms asked by petitioners will have to wait until next construction season; residents of William Street, between Minnesota and Sheridan, are asking for surface on basis of 30-foot strip for which they would pay and additional six-foot lane, cost to be borne by Cape Special Road District.

New fiberboard floor is being placed in spectator section of Common Pleas Courthouse preparatory to laying of new linoleum surface.

75 years ago: June 21, 1929

A.H. Gerhardt and Son, local contractors, have been awarded contract for construction of new $125,000 Gem Theater building at Cairo, Ill.

Waco biplane, equipped with pontoons and piloted by A.B. Chalk of A.B. Chalk Flying School of Miami, Fla., landed on Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau yesterday to refuel on its way to St. Louis; Chalk was accompanied by Jesse Jay.
