Cape Girardeau Riverfest officials say expanded promotional efforts, a move to Common Pleas Courthouse Park, and excellent weather combined to attract a record crowd to this weekend's extravaganza; an estimated 55,000 to 60,000 packed downtown Cape Girardeau on Friday and Saturday for the 10th annual Riverfest.
As one of the driest springs in years comes to a close in the area, the National Weather service predicts that without rain, the Mississippi River will drop to 5.8 feet by mid-July.
Construction of a new floor on the Mississippi River traffic bridge here moved into its final stages this week, and the work foreman predicts it will be completed by mid-July.
The five-digit ZIP codes for the 52 post offices affiliated with the Cape Girardeau Sectional Center are announced by Postmaster Ted R. Regenhardt; he urges everyone to use the new codes, saying when the ZIP code plan is fully in operation, it will give the United States the most modern system of mail distribution in the world; the new program goes into effect July 1.
Loot totaling $992.35 was taken sometime over the weekend by burglars, who hammered open a safe in the Kelso Oil Co. office, 535 N. Main St.; nothing else in the office was disturbed.
The plan of holding union services at Courthouse Park during July and August, a practice followed here in recent years, has been discarded by the Ministerial Alliance; ministers said they have activities that will keep most of them busy during the summer months in their own congregations; the Salvation Army is making plans to hold evening services at the park during the two midsummer months.
Lawrence, the 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Thompson of near Delta, was brought to Cape Girardeau on the Hoxie train last night with both arms broken; the youngster had climbed into a mulberry tree and was eating the berries, when the limb upon which he was standing broke; he fell about 30 feet.
The Coburn Players, a touring acting company, presents "Romeo and Juliet" under the stars on the Normal School campus; tomorrow afternoon, they will perform "Twelfth Night," and in the evening, "Henry V."
