25 years ago: June 20, 1987

After a slow first night, Riverfest '87 finishes with a bang; officials say Friday night's attendance was around 12,000; 30,000 people pack Cape Girardeau's downtown streets today.

The former Sunny Hill Motel, 45 S. West End Blvd., has undergone complete renovation and remodeling; it will open soon as the West End Park Inc. apartment complex, featuring a swimming pool, physical fitness center and other amenities.

50 years ago: June 20, 1962

Workers have begun mowing and grading on State College property along North Sprigg Street, marking the beginning of construction of the $2.5 million dormitory complex to be built by the fall of 1963.

A group of Catholic clergymen from this area departs early in the morning by chartered plane for Wichita, Kan., where they will attend consecration ceremonies later in the day for Bishop-elect Ignatius J. Strecker, new spiritual leader of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese; among those attending from this area are monsignors Leo P. Kampmann, Joseph F. Keusenkothen, Charles P. Schmitt and Joseph H. Huels and the Rev. Joseph P. Dyra.

75 years ago: June 20, 1937

Special services in observance of Father's Day are held at First Christian Church in the morning; J. Henry Caruthers leads the litany of consecration, and Leonard Howard reads the Scripture lesson.

Capt. and Mrs. Elof Anderson, who came here this week from Jamestown, N.D., are the new officers in charge of the Salvation Army organization in Cape Girardeau.

100 years ago: June 20, 1912

A large audience saw the Coburn Players perform "Macbeth" on the Normal School campus last night, and, despite the chilliness of the night air, thoroughly enjoyed the performance; another Shakespeare play, "The Taming of the Shrew," will be presented tonight.

Mary Wilson has returned home after closing a successful school year in Oklahoma City; since her school closed, she has visited her sister in Shreveport, La., accompanied by her nephew, Frank Wilson of Oklahoma City.
