Despite a last minute request from Southeast Missouri State University's dean of the College of Humanities, Dr. Fred Goodwin, the Cape Girardeau City Council last night gave initial approval to a $16.8 million city budget that contains no funds to help operate the university-run cable television public access channel; the university had sought $20,000.

A Cape Girardeau physician associated with Saint Francis Medical Center a number of years has been honored by that institution with the announcement that its newly constructed addition will be named for him; the Edward D. Campbell Critical Care Center will recognize Campbell.

50 years ago: June 2, 1958

The mobile X-ray unit is on Main Street in Cape Girardeau to take chest pictures of those who wish to stop in; it is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau County Tuberculosis Association.

Fire of undetermined origin Saturday night destroyed a frame building on Route N near Whitewater, which was formerly used as the Collins-Moore schoolhouse.

75 years ago: June 2, 1933

Paul Schilling, 36, of Cape Girardeau dies at Southeast Missouri Hospital of injuries sustained when he fell from a scaffold at the Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. plant.

Charles A. Lee, state superintendent of schools and leading Democratic politician, is said to be favored to succeed Dr. Joseph A. Serena as president of Southeast Missouri State Teachers College; the report is that Lee has let it be known he will take the job, providing Gov. Guy Park permits him to name his successor as state superintendent.

100 years ago: June 2, 1908

In order to make good the shortages found in the office of city collector while Gust Schultz was the incumbent, $4,840.02 is paid into the city depository.

The Ministerial Alliance has voted to overturn earlier plans to hold union meetings Sunday evenings during July and August; the Cape Girardeau City Council is planning to enact an ordinance prohibiting residents from using the public park around the courthouse as a means to preserve the lawn.
