25 years ago: June 19, 1987

A proposed new street to relieve traffic congestion on Broadview Street is meeting with little city council support; it was proposed last month to build a street from the parking lot of the Tri-Con manufacturing plant on Broadview Street to Kingshighway.

Riverfest begins in the afternoon, with activities for children, square dancing, and music at two stages; the Kohlfeld/Stroh's Riverfest Run is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Main Street and Broadway.

50 years ago: June 19, 1962

As a result of school board action, the foreign language curriculum in the Cape Girardeau School District will undergo major changes within the next two years; the system will drop elementary Spanish classes for the coming year, and new language laboratories will be installed at Central High School this year and in the new junior high school next year.

Police are kept busy during the night investigating the reports of prowlers in three areas of Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: June 19, 1937

Headed by Sterling P. Jones, president of the Audubon Society of Missouri, and with such notable "bird people" in attendance as Lillie Ernst of the St. Louis public school system and Tom Kirksey, St. Louis Bird Club leader, a large delegation assembles at Arboreta, country estate of Judge and Mrs. I.R. Kelso to formally accept, on behalf of the Missouri Audubon Society, Springdale Bird Sanctuary, a gift from the Kelso family.

Frank Hohler, a Cape Girardeau carpenter and member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish, was seriously injured yesterday when he fell 20 feet from the roof of the assembly room of St. Mary's High School, while engaged in applying a coating of tar to the roof; he sustained a fracture of a vertebra in his lower back.

100 years ago: June 19, 1912

According to preliminary plans, a municipal water and light plant for Cape Girardeau would cost $226,000; the plans call for the pumping station and light plant to be built north of the present plant, so the water can be pumped from the river near Cape Rock.

Work on the new bank building at Appleton commenced Thursday; Amos Myer of New Wells, with the assistance of Gottleib Seibel and a concrete mixer from Altenburg, Mo., is putting in the concrete foundation.
