A proposed municipal budget of $10.2 million for the coming fiscal year has been presented to the Cape Girardeau City Council by city manager W.G. Lawley; the budget is more than $2 million less than the fiscal 1979-80 budget.

Nancy Bray, former Southeast Missouri State University faculty member, is named director of public relations for Southeast Missouri Hospital.

50 years ago: June 19, 1955

Dr. S. Hugh Bradley, representing the Board of World Missions of the Presbyterian Church, U.S., speaks in the afternoon at First Presbyterian Church; Bradley was born in China and is a graduate of Davidson College and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia.

FORNFELT, Mo. -- Thomas A. Uelsmann, 29, cashier of the First State Bank of Fornfelt, suffers a broken back in a fall while painting a cornice on the garage at the family home in Fornfelt; he apparently slips on a joist, causing him to fall.

75 years ago: June 19, 1930

The city council starts to make an intensive study of two reports which have been on file with the city clerk for several years and which include plans for the construction of a complete water plant at Cape Rock, and an intake at Cape Rock and filter plant at the existing location of the water plant of the Missouri Utilities Co.

With tentative acceptances from many prominent leaders in the Midwest, president Joseph A. Serena of the Teachers College is rapidly whipping into shape plans for the formal dedication on Oct. 3 of the new stadium at Houck Field; among the dignitaries who have been invited to the event are Gov. Henry S. Caulfield, U.S. Sen. Harry B. Hawes, and congressman Dewey J. Short.

100 years ago: June 19, 1905

The Daily Republican's appeal to merchants to close their doors every evening at 6:30, except Saturday, is bearing fruit; the newspaper expects to have every shopkeeper send in his name and well wishes for the plan soon; there isn't a man or woman who can't do his trading before this time; by giving clerks a few hours of recreation each evening, save one, they will be in better humor and more anxious to serve customers than when worn out from long hours and the dreadful heat.

For the fifth time since the pipes were put in, the heavy rain of yesterday washed great holes in the gutters over the large drain pipes on the Broadway hill, and the street is again in bad condition.
