1964

For the first time in its history, Cape Girardeau's downtown area is now securely sealed against all but the most gargantuan of floods; from the Mississippi River Bridge on the south to Sloan's Creek on the north, the city is protected by a concrete wall and an earthen levee; the last gap in the system was filled Friday, when a section of concrete was poured on the North Main Street riverfront.

Dr. William L. Allison, who for two years has been assistant superintendent of the Cape Girardeau School District, has submitted his resignation; he will return to the State College faculty.

1939

Methodists from throughout the district gather in Cape Girardeau to celebrate the unification of the three branches of the denomination: the Methodist Protestant, and the northern and southern branches of the Methodist Episcopal churches; keynote speaker is Bishop John Calvin Broomfield of Fairmont, West Virginia, the new presiding bishop over the area.

The United Spanish War Veterans and their Auxiliary open the annual Department of Missouri encampment in Cape Girardeau; 550 delegates are here for the convention.

1914

J.H. Strain has purchased the interest of Robert Cowan in the Princess Theater on Main Street; Strain plans to improve the show house.

The ladies who launched a campaign some time ago for a reading room and eventually a public library aren't asleep by any means; a permanent library board has been created, composed of Mesdames W.H. Harrison and George Bell, Mary Kochtitzky, Elizabeth Davis, Ernestine Osterloh and Martha Shea; and Louis Houck, E. Drusch, W.H. Huters, H.A. Nussbaum and Fred Naeter.
