JoAnne Meyer, former recreation director of the Cape Girardeau VIP Industries, has been named to replace Pat Kinder as the new Scott City Parks and Recreation director.

Larry Essner, senior vice president at Centerre Bank, is installed as the new chairman of the Cape County Chapter of the American Red Cross; he succeeds Harry Rediger.

50 years ago: June 18, 1959

Trail of Tears State Park, although far from the finished product and tourist attraction it will be one day, is nevertheless expected to draw its 10,000th visitor this year before the end of the month; Supt. Clarence Schilling says more and more people are beginning to use the park.

Jackson's Jaycees organization, with a year of unparalleled community service behind it, is named the nation's most outstanding first-year club at the annual national Jaycee convention at Buffalo, N.Y.

75 years ago: June 18, 1934

Sen. R.L. Dearmont, county relief chairman, is notified that 27 more young men will be enrolled from Cape Girardeau County during July for the Civilian Conservation Corps; it isn't known definitely where the new contingent will be sent, but it is probable that part or all of it will go to the camp at Sam A. Baker State Park.

The Dempsey Grocer Co., wholesale firm which is discontinuing business, will close out all of its stock at 119 Water St. by the end of the week; the firm began as an exchange or trading post back in 1864, and was founded by G.H. Dempsey; the present firm was organized in 1913 by A.R. Zoelsmann.

100 years ago: June 18, 1909

Members of the Commercial Club will be busy next week considering numerous proposals for factory locations; among manufacturers seeking sites in Cape Girardeau are a washboard maker, school desk manufacturer and a chair factory.

The stone setters on the federal building are nearing completion of their work; they have started on the cornice, which extends 10 feet up from the regular stone surface of the building; the roof is to be of heavy tin and will not be visible from the outside.
