25 years ago: June 16, 1987

After considerable debate last night, the Cape Girardeau City Council approved a lengthy list of road and bridge projects that depend on passage of a sales tax measure for funding; the half-cent transportation tax issue will be on the August ballot.

An ad hoc group of Cape Girardeau business and civic leaders is suggesting a different Mississippi River bridge highway route than one favored by state officials; the alternate route calls for the widening of Highway 74 and extending it out to Interstate 55.

50 years ago: June 16, 1962

Low bids submitted yesterday for construction of Cape Girardeau's junior high school exceeded by about $220,000 the funds the district has allotted for the project; school officials and representatives of the architect, Perkins and Will of Chicago, huddled after the bid opening to discuss the various possibilities.

A group of musicians who played at the New Colony Club last night report to police that an electric guitar, amplifier and speaker were stolen from their car while parked at the club; Louis Hobbs of Cape Girardeau is able to give a description of a suspect car.

75 years ago: June 16, 1937

The Audubon Society of Missouri will hold a meeting in Cape Girardeau Saturday to view the first bird sanctuary in the state, a gift to the cause from Judge and Mrs. I.R. Kelso.

Rainstorms, accompanied by scattered winds, struck Cape Girardeau and the district last night and this morning, drenching the territory and in some instances causing considerable damage to standing wheat, which farmers had been unable to harvest.

100 years ago: June 16, 1912

Many Cape Girardeans travel to Illmo in the afternoon for the blessing and laying of the cornerstone for the new Catholic church; participating in the ceremony are the Rev. E. Pruente of St. Mary's Church and the Rev. James Murtaugh of St. Vincent's College.

The Rev. J.F. Lawson is installed as pastor of the Presbyterian Church here in the morning; the installation sermon is preached by the Rev. W.W. Killough of Perryville, Mo.
