According to Arthur Robley Jr., project engineer for the Corps of Engineers, work should be completed within 10 days on the final portion of the Main Street Levee Improvement District floodwall project; constructing a dirt backfill, placing a slope river gauge and adjusting closure gates were major jobs started yesterday by Cousins Construction Co. of St. Louis.

Classes in student conducting, accompanying techniques, music theory and voice consume the morning hours of 90 high school students enrolled this week in the Summer Choral Camp at State College.

75 years ago: June 14, 1935

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Because he lost a friendly wager on the James Braddock-Max Baer fight last night, Bill Hopkins is scheduled to push a wheelbarrow from Chaffee, Mo., to Dutchtown tomorrow; in the wheelbarrow will be Bernard Papin, who won the wager.

The governing board that runs the Municipal Baseball League in Cape Girardeau is said to be about evenly divided over the issue of whether to allow former big league pitcher Elam Vangilder to don a uniform; the rules of the league say a man must live, work or go to school in the city; Vangilder doesn't qualify, as he farms on the Perryville Road, 6 miles from town; however, rules are made to be suspended.

100 years ago: June 14, 1910

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Edward F. Regenhardt of Cape Girardeau has been named U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Missouri; his name is sent to the Senate by President Taft, and it will be immediately confirmed.

Norvell Anderson, who spent the winter in Texas for his health, has returned to his Cape Girardeau home.
