Southeast Missouri State University Foundation has backed out of plans to buy dilapidated old house so that two Cape Girardeau men can obtain it and renovate structure; foundation officials had considered buying 90-year-old house at 534 Washington at cost of $24,500 and tearing it down.

"Truss and Obey Lay Builders," small group of carpenters that aids in construction of churches and related structures, is in Jackson building new education center for Shawnee Hills Baptist Church.

25 years ago: June 14, 1979

Cape Girardeau County Court, whose request for "friendly annexation" of two county parks by city of Cape Girardeau brought objections from city of Jackson, has taken second look at situation.

One of three trade unions which stopped working because of failure to renew work contracts has agreed on contract with Southeast Missouri Contractors Association; Bricklayers Local 23 members returned to work this week.

50 years ago: June 14, 1954

"Operation Alert," nationwide Civil Defense exercise, has its particular Cape Girardeau problem when local officials notify state headquarters of theoretical sabotaging of traffic bridge by "enemy forces," badly damaging it and blocking traffic in Mississippi River.

Loomis Strong, 28, of Cape Girardeau, sustains internal injuries when his automobile goes out of control on South Pacific Street at College intersection and crashes into residence of P.H. Rafferty, 601 S. Pacific.

75 years ago: June 14, 1929

Motor traffic to St. Louis from Cape Girardeau is hampered severely by rains, with one route virtually impassable and two others in such condition that repairs are necessary before travel can continue; motorists are urged to find alternate route to St. Louis.

Steamer Cape Girardeau has been withdrawn from St. Louis and Cape Girardeau trade for remainder of June and will make four special cruises on Illinois and Mississippi rivers.
