Perryville, Mo. -- With number of landfills in Missouri dwindling and volume of solid waste regulations flourishing, officials are lending widespread credence to concept of regional solid waste management; officials in seven-county Southeast Missouri solid waste management district will meet this week to express their preference regarding a regional landfill.
Cape Girardeau Police Department is going out of burglar alarm monitoring business at end of June; since department moved to its headquarters at 40 S. Sprigg in 1976, it has served as monitoring headquarters for more than 200 private alarm systems throughout city; with installation of new Emergency 911 console in communications room, there will no longer be room for control grid for alarm system.

Lutesville, Mo. -- Firefighters and equipment from throughout Southeast Missouri are called to Lutesville to fight major fire and explosions which kill young man and injure four other people; David L. Cook, 26, is killed when there is explosion in duplex in which he and four others who were injured were living; explosion in house occurs almost simultaneously with explosion and fire in gasoline tank truck which is pumping gas into above ground holding tanks across street.
Southeast Missouri Hospital's Cancer Treatment Center campaign fund reaches $734,084, as officials announce plans for groundbreaking ceremonies Sunday afternoon; campaign seeks to raise $1.5 million to build center for those who have cancer and to purchase highly technical equipment necessary for care of patients.

The Rev. C.E. Mount, pastor of Presbyterian Church, returns to his pulpit after attending 93rd General Assembly of Presbyterian Church in United States at Montreat, N.C., as representative of Potosi Presbytery; Mount served as commissioner and was on church's standing committee on women's work; union with United and U.S.A. Presbyterian churches was one of principal subjects before assembly.

Kennett, Mo. -- Along 25-mile front, National Guardsmen and hundreds of volunteer workers are standing guard over Dunklin County levees protecting hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland threatened by devastating waters of flooding St. Francis River; patrolling forces are augmented early in morning, and every stretch of levee will be carefully guarded tonight for crest of flood, which is expected to reach this vicinity at midnight or shortly afterward.
Flags along principal streets of Cape Girardeau mark city's annual observance of Flag Day; flag committee of Louis K. Juden Post of American Legion sold number of flags for residences in campaign preliminary to Flag Day; another flag-selling campaign will be conducted between now and Fourth of July.- Sharon K.
