25 years ago: June 13, 1981

A serious design flaw in the $1.3 million Cape Girardeau County Jail was partly responsible for the recent jail escape there, and plans are being made to correct the problem; the problem centers on the door that leads to the jail's security booth, the facility's control center.

The recent heavy rains have made conditions ripe for mosquito breeding, but the city of Cape Girardeau plans to fight back by spending approximately $5,000 this summer on mosquito fogging; the fogging will begin Monday.

50 years ago: June 13, 1956

A total of $96,584 has been pledged to date to the Cape Osteopathic Hospital building campaign, says Edward L. Downs, campaign general chairman; that amount includes only signed, confirmed contributions on hand at campaign headquarters.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- The Twin City Industrial Development Corp. has announced that Lowell Brown of Overland, Mo., owner of Brown Tool Manufacturing Co., has agreed to locate a division of that company, which will be known as the Solar Co., in Bollinger County; the plant will make pneumatic heavy duty hammers.

75 years ago: June 13, 1931

Rep. Rush H. Limbaugh returns from Jefferson City, where he was active as one of the House managers in impeachment proceedings against Larry Brunk, state treasurer, whose acquittal was voted late yesterday by the Missouri Senate.

KENNETT, Mo. -- Mayor Russell R. Pankey of Kennett, 35, dies at a Memphis, Tenn., hospital following a brief illness; he was removed to the hospital Monday for an operation for appendicitis and for removal of the gallbladder; he was improving, when he suffered an attack of heart disease from which he failed to rally.

100 years ago: June 13, 1906

Wheat harvesting in Cape Girardeau County began last week and has continued until this afternoon, when a slight shower stops the work; farmers are happy with the yield; in Illinois, wheat is ripening a bit slower.

The Rev. F. Klein, pastor of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kelso, Mo., will return to his charge sometime this week after being ill in St. Louis for some time; several weeks ago, he went there to receive medical attention at St. Anthony's Hospital.
