Scott City -- St. Louis-Southwestern "Cotton Belt" Railroad is headed down track into history; earlier this year, Southern Pacific Lines announced it was restructuring its operation into single, 15-state railroad; that merger means end of Cotton Belt and Rio Grande; at its peak, Cotton Belt employed between 400 and 500 workers in Illmo-Fornfelt-Ancell area.

Cape Girardeau residents have been complying with Missouri Utilities Co.'s request to conserve water, but James R. Lansmon, company's vice president and treasurer, says continued cooperation is necessary; request for water conservation came Saturday, when temperature in Cape Girardeau reached 100 degrees; hot temperatures have been aggravated by lack of rain in area, and river dropped to 10.4 feet over weekend.
Advance -- Dispute over street parties and enforcement of city auto stickers ordinance has lead to firing of Advance's two policemen; officers were dismissed Friday after disagreement during city council meeting the preceding Tuesday; pair are entitled to public hearing when council meets tomorrow.
50 years ago: June 13, 1952
Rising in keeping with heat, water consumption yesterday hit new high for year when total of 2,400,000 gallons were pumped; that is 100,000 more than mark for three previous days, but is still below all-time record, made on July 31 last year; by noon today, temperature had risen to 95 degrees, making it eighth straight day of 90-degree plus weather.
Air Force in Washington announces that Buddy J. Bonney, 20, of Cape Girardeau, chief gunner on B-29 Superfortress, is missing in action in fighting in Korea; Bonney went overseas in May after being in training for 14 months at Lackland, Texas, Air Base and at Forbes Air Base in Topeka, Kansas; he is son of Duree Bonney of Cape Girardeau and Mrs. Grace Shaner of Jackson.
75 years ago: June 13, 1927
Falling 18 inches in past 48 hours, Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau is receding rapidly with indications that it will fall below flood stage within three days; today's stage is 33.4 feet; with stream receding rapidly and all danger from another flood apparently having passed, farmers in Dorena basin in Mississippi County, who were driven from their homes by flood water pouring through levee break, are preparing to return.
Boston - Elam Vangilder, Cape Girardeau, Mo., native, pitches and bats St. Louis Browns to victory over Red Sox, 2 to 0; he allows only five hits and scores Browns' second run with homerun in fifth inning.
