Missouri Highway and Transportation Department plans to widen Route K bridge over Interstate 55 next year to accommodate growing traffic; bridge will be widened from four lanes to seven lanes with shoulders.

CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- What seismologists term a "moderately strong" earth tremor shakes Caruthersville around 11:12 p.m.; quake registers 3.73 on Richter scale and is centered about two miles south of town.

Fast-moving wind which struck Cape Girardeau and vicinity yesterday, accompanied by deluge of rain, brought little damage to city's electrical and telephone circuits; street department crews are completing clean-up of fallen tree branches.

Thirteen-point program to move Cape Girardeau forward, including some objectives that have already been accomplished, was adopted by city council Wednesday; top objective on list is balanced budget by December 1956; final point on program is construction of adequate swimming pool for town.

75 years ago: June 10, 1929

Reaching a stage of 33 feet, Mississippi River is at its crest at Cape Girardeau and should begin to fall later in day; no damage has been done to city's riverfront; additional rise of two feet would be required to bring stream up to level of low portions of Water Street.-- Sharon K. Sanders
