First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Southeast Missouri board of directors selects a new chairman of the board and a new president; board member Cordell Dombrowski is elected chairman, replacing Bob Suelmann, who also was president; vice president Mike McGannon is elected president.

State College students overwhelmingly approve a proposal to assess enrollment fees to help finance a new $1,000,000 Student Union Building in an all-campus election; the proposal, needing a simple majority vote to become effective, passes by a 5-1 margin.

CARDWELL, Mo. -- Dunklin County public health authorities move into a migrant labor camp here to immunize Mexican workers against polio, after a suspected outbreak of the disease.

A new, large barn on the Wulfers Bros. place on West Broadway is damaged by fire at 3:50 a.m.; the end of the barn, including walls of the feed crib, some rafters and some baled hay, are damaged before firemen can check the blaze after 2 1/2 hours; the old barn at the same location was ruined by fire Sept. 27, 1936,

Walter E. Bort of Clinton, Iowa., architect for the Ford Hopkins Drug Co., is in Cape Girardeau laying out the floor plans for the new drugstore on Main Street, which will be opened early in September; he is planning for a major store here, which will be the equal of any of the stores in the largest cities.

1913

The members of the Capaha baseball team have elected Ed Gentry, a member of the team, the club's new manager; Gentry has already written five teams asking for dates for games.

By noon, nearly all the athletic teams and the declaimers, essayists, debaters and rooters from 40 high schools in Southeast Missouri had arrived to take part in or witness the eighth annual revival of athletic and forensic competition at the Normal School and fairgrounds.
