25 years ago: May 9, 1982

More than 800 area young people will leave high school and embark on a path either to higher education or careers this month as schools hold commencement exercises; the largest graduating class, some 344 students, is at Central High School.

A reunion was held recently of former members of the Capahas baseball team; among those attending the gathering were Marvin Gocket, who started his career as a Caps manager; Red Schwettman, one of the best hurlers of his era; Jack Hunter, a catcher; and Jack Southworth, an infielder.

50 years ago: May 9, 1957

Cape Girardeau Central High baseball club won second place honors last week in the subdistrict high school tourney, with first place going to the Chaffee, Mo., team; members of the Central team are John Reed, Dean Meinz, Jim Russell, Walter Grebing, Jim Faris, Jerry Harper, Jim Green, John Williams, Ronald Schlimme, Lewis Bock, Bill Crafton, Carlos Ratliff, Mike Taylor, Larry Bauer, Wayne Boswell, Dave Hawkins and Gary Wadlington; coaches are Welden Hager and Leon Brinkopf.

Henry Margraf has been chosen president of the Cape Girardeau Lions Club for the coming year.

75 years ago: May 9, 1932

Heroes of the Civil War, their ranks diminished by death, come back to Cape Girardeau for their annual encampment; members of the Grand Army of the Republic assemble again to honor their departed comrades.

After four long weeks of hoeing, pulling weeds and waiting, the children of the first grade at Jefferson School discover that someone visited their garden over the weekend and robbed it of the entire crop of radishes.

100 years ago: May 9, 1907

The Cape Girardeau Board of Health has issued its annual cleanup order to residents, which means just so much paper wasted; this town will never be cleaned up until an officer of the law gets a big club and goes after the people who have no civic pride or common decency.

Erma Fulbright and Eula Miller, both young school teachers of Millersville, have been named again as teachers for the coming school year in the same districts wherein they taught this year.
