Southeast Missouri State University's board of regents gives its approval for the establishment of a Center for Earthquake Studies in the College of Science and Technology; the center will engage in educational and research activities.

About 30 people, including members of Vision 2000 and the Teen Challenge training center, plant 700 rose bushes on the northwest side of Interstate 55/Route K intersection; the roses are planted on a gentle slope in an area about 30 feet wide by 200 feet long.

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Jim Stone of Cape Girardeau, whose laser project won him the Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair top award, may show it on a national television show; shortly after arriving here, he was contacted by the ABC television network and interviewed as a possible guest on its "Science All Stars" show.

Park commissioner Harry A. Siemers says a new storage space must be found for the 200-bed emergency hospital unit that has been kept in the National Guard Armory for the past six years; the Guard needs the space now occupied by the civil defense hospital.

Honored by the presence of national president of the Boy Scouts of America Walter W. Head, 1,000 Scouts from the Southeast Missouri Area Council put on the first Boy Scout Circus last night before an overflowing crowd in Houck Field House.

At a meeting yesterday, Joseph Haas asked the city council to take steps to change the municipal zoning ordinance as it applies to his undeveloped property on West Broadway, saying he desires to make the large area, now a farm, into a commercial sector.

1914

The Regenhardt Construction Co. begins work on the modern theater building just east of The Republican office on Broadway; when finished, it will be leased to a corporation of young business men for entertainment purposes; architect for the structure is W.E. Parlow.

The little 10-month-old baby boy of Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Thompson of South Spanish Street falls from the upper story porch to the ground, a distance of about 20 feet, and sustains no injuries except a few minor bruises.
