Garden club women from throughout the state begin registering here for the three-day convention of the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri; a reception will be held this evening at the Holiday Inn to meet national and state officers.

Beginning May 11, Cape Girardeau and McClure, Illinois, telephone customers will dial all seven digits of the telephone numbers they are calling, instead of only five; the change brings local customers one step closer to a time when they will be able to dial long-distance direct across the nation.

Attorney M.E. Montgomery of Sikeston, Missouri, and formerly of Benton, Missouri, announces he probably will be a candidate for circuit judge in 1940; Montgomery, a Democrat, formerly served two terms as Scott County prosecuting attorney.

With all hotels and nearby tourist camps taken up with advance reservations, the housing committee for the Rotary Club convention is preparing to turn to private homes to care for the visitors, who will begin arriving in Cape Girardeau tomorrow for a two-day conference.

1914

John Rouse will build Bellevue Street from Lorimier to Pacific streets; the Cape Girardeau City Council has awarded him the contract on a bid of $9,148.88; the street will have a 5-inch concrete base with a preparation that will make the street waterproof and noiseless.

Owing to the work of removing the rock ledge from Aquamsi Street along the riverfront, the Frisco engineers have decided to move the main line track a short distance east; at present, the tracks run close to the ledge, and each time a blast is made, a shower of rock of every size falls on the track; clearing of the track so frequently has caused trains to be delayed.
