EAST CAPE GIRARDEAU, Ill. -- Illinois Department of Transportation has begun operation to permanently raise by two feet a dip in Route 146, between East Cape Girardeau and Cape Girardeau river bridge, section of road threatened by seepwater.

50 years ago: May 5, 1954

Residents of newly organized Jackson School District Tuesday passed $1.65 tax levy in special election, by vote of 449 to 103; communities included in district are Burfordville, Fruitland, Jackson, Pocahontas, Shepherd and Tilsit.

BLOOMFIELD, Mo. -- Stoddard County schools will get $420,000 in state building aid as result of reorganization election yesterday, in which eight high school districts added small rural districts.

75 years ago: May 5, 1929

Twenty-four candidates for membership in Red Star Baptist Church are baptized in Juden Creek, north of city limits; new members have been added to congregation during regular services of church, result of evangelism among members.

Sketches of new football stadium and athletic field for Teachers College were ordered prepared by board of regents Saturday; Jameson and Sperl, of St. Louis, who designed number of buildings for Washington University and new University of Missouri Stadium, were employed as architects.
