A strike by operating engineers has interrupted millions of dollars worth of construction in the area; the only visible activity yesterday at the construction site of a $9 million Veterans Home was two picketers sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck at the entrance; a U.S. 61 widening project at Jackson is also idle.

The Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport is operating in the red, and without increased revenue, the deficit will continue to soar; in addition, the number of boardings here declined in 1988 and the decline is continuing this year.

Back in Cape Girardeau for their 33rd annual convention, members of the Southeast Missouri Retail Lumber Dealers Association report the building trades definitely on the upswing, noting in particular that new construction is taking place in virtually every district community; the convention is being held in the Hotel Marquette.

Harold F. Simpson of the Martin Oil Co. secures a city permit for the installation of a 12,000-gallon underground tank to be used as a storage for kerosene; the tank will be on the west side of West End Boulevard, and about 300 feet from the street.

1914

Ervin Niemeyer, a young man working for Barrett Cotner in his auto supply store on Broadway, is nursing a broken arm; while riding his motorcycle yesterday along Independence Street, up the hill between Spanish and Lorimier streets, the fender came loose, causing the front wheel to become locked; Niemeyer was thrown to the pavement, breaking his left arm just above the wrist.

Ben Glore, the big baseball pitcher who twirled the Capahas to victory over the Jackson boys Sunday, returns to his home in Crystal City, Mo.; it is likely he will move his family to Cape Girardeau in the near future.
