Union Electric has filed a $100,000 lawsuit against the city of Jackson in a battle over who may provide a city residence with electrical service; both entities want to provide electricity to the house at 3104 Bainbridge Road, at the edge of the city limits.
Riverfest, the annual downtown Cape Girardeau festival, will have a new look this year; instead of setting booths north and south on Water and Main streets, the booths will run east and west, primarily along Themis Street; Riverfest is set for June 17-18.
Widening Highway 61 through Cape Girardeau is in full swing, and on the north end, the new road is taking shape; plans call for widening the present two-lane concrete pavement to four undivided lanes and surfacing the lanes with asphalt.
Someone tried to derail a train Thursday night by placing heavy timbers on both tracks in an area just east of the 900 block of South Giboney Street; according to a Missouri Pacific Railroad spokesman, it was the 10th such occurrence in the past two weeks.
Specifications for bidding on a contract to erect the $175,000 addition to Saint Francis Hospital are released to contractors; they will have two to three weeks to examine the plans and submit their bids; it is hoped to have construction underway within four weeks.
Dr. B.W. Hays of Jackson is installed as president of the Missouri State Medical Association in its closing session at Jefferson City; elected in Cape Girardeau last May, he in turn will be succeeded next year by Dr. James R. McVay of Kansas City.
At the second annual triangular debate among the Normal Schools of Missouri last night, the Cape Girardeau school further established its leadership in public speaking by winning both of its debates; members of the team are C.B. Crow, Richard N. Owens, Grace Brackmann and J.J. Sheerin.
The First Baptist Church building is crowded in the evening to hear Dr. W.S. Dearmont give his report on the fourth American peace congress, which closed its labors last Saturday in St. Louis.
