Congregations of the United Churches of Christ in the area -- Evangelical in Cape; Emanuel in Jackson; St. John's, Jackson Route 1; and St. James, Jackson Route 2 -- gather for a joint worship service in the morning at the United Retreat Center, Jackson Route 2.

50 years ago: May 4, 1961

Funds for operation of the Cape Girardeau Public Housing Authority have been cut off at their federal source pending city council disposition of an initiative petition filed with it by opponents of the city's proposed housing program.

Kroger Co. announces a new egg-handling plant will be located in Jackson, which will buy, grade and pack eggs; the plant site, at the north edge of the city limits on U.S. 61, is being purchased from the Jackson Industrial Development Corp.

75 years ago: May 4, 1936

Along with observing the 30th anniversary of St. Vincent's Knights of Columbus Council 1111 yesterday, the cornerstone for the new Knights of Columbus hall on South Spanish Street was unveiled.

Four members of the Cape Girardeau School Board meet with architect William B. Ittner Jr. of St. Louis to discuss in a general way the Lorimier School ground grading project and possible moves in the direction of building a new grammar school there.

100 years ago: May 4, 1911

Cape Girardeau will soon be on the list of cities that have postal savings banks created by act of Congress at the last term; one of the chief objects of the plan, which permits the postal service to operate savings banks, is to keep hundreds of thousands of dollars in this country which foreign laborers send to their former homes; immigrant workers distrust regular banks.

All streetcars on the loop lines will run out Broadway to the fairgrounds after 6:30 p.m. in order to carry the crowds to the big carnival.
