Two Chanute, Kan., women escape with minor injuries when their single-engine airplane crashes shortly after taking off from the municipal airport; the two are participating in the third annual 2,100-mile Shangri-La Grand Pris Air Race.

State College A Cappella Choir climaxes a successful year's activities when it presents its annual spring concert in Memorial Hall ball room in the afternoon; the 44-voice choir is under the direction of professor Doyle Dumas.

The Rev. O.H. Schmidt of St. Louis is guest speaker at the morning worship service at St. Andrew Lutheran Church; Schmidt is executive secretary of the board of foreign missions of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

75 years ago: May 4, 1933

While the brewery at Old Appleton is ready for operation, it is marking time pending issuance of a permit for the plant to make the legalized 3.2 percent beer; it is understood Benny McGovern, former boxer, will become the wholesale distributor for the brewery, if it is licensed.

Appointment of one or more Democrats as liquidators of the closed Sturdivant Bank is expected within a few weeks, replacing Rush H. Limbaugh and J. Grant Frye.

100 years ago: May 4, 1908

Mrs. James A. Matteson, widow of the late paint manufacturer of North Main Street, died unexpectedly yesterday in Chicago; her son, Robert Matteson, leaves in the morning to take charge of the remains and convey them here for burial.

Cape Girardeau councilmen do a lot of business at their meeting, including passing seven new laws; one of those laws provides for the arrest of anyone caught spitting on the sidewalks and pavements.
