Charleston, Mo. -- David N. Coon is ordained priest by Bishop John J. Leibrecht of Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese in evening ceremony at St. Henry's Catholic Church; Coon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Coon of Charleston, received his early education at Missouri School for the Blind, returning to St. Henry School in 1976 to complete his elementary education.

Five Cape Girardeau firefighters yesterday were cited by Fire Chief Robert Ridgeway for their lifesaving efforts in two incidents this month; commended were Capt. Scott Altenthal, Fire Marshal Thomas Hinkebein, Capt. Don Smith, and firefighters Dennis Ainsworth and James Moyers.

25 years ago: May 30, 1978

Lake Boutin in Trail of Tears State Park was opened for swimming over Memorial Day weekend for first time since being closed nine years ago because of high bacteria levels; estimated 750 people availed themselves of beach and water over three-day weekend.

Southeast Missouri State University wins appeal of small claims court judgment against university's policy of ticketing vehicles on Cape Girardeau streets; First Division Judge Stanley A. Grimm enters ruling reversing lower court's decision following three and one-half hour non-jury trial in circuit court in Jackson.

50 years ago: May 30, 1953

General holiday is in effect in Cape Girardeau in observance of Memorial Day; virtually all business places are closed; Veterans of Foreign Wars place flags on graves of departed comrades, and brief Memorial Day service honoring dead of past wars is held in afternoon at post home on Kingshighway.

Ceremony yesterday at grave site of Princess Otahki, near Egypt Mills, marked presentation of bronze plaque in name of Girl Scouts by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond W. Strom and their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kuczwara; before ceremony, Dr. O.J. Miller, owner of property on which grave is located, informally related some of history connected with site and with Cherokee Indians.

75 years ago: May 30, 1928

Memorial Day. With business suspended virtually throughout city, Cape Girardeau pays tribute to its soldier dead, with services arranged for afternoon at Courthouse Park and at historic Old Lorimier Cemetery; flags are flying along principal streets in observance of occasion.

Tuesday, first day of registration for summer term of Teachers College, saw nearly a record number of students enroll for classes; 897 students enrolled first day, which was 65 ahead of first day last year; with two weeks longer for enrollment, it is believed number will go over 1,000.
