1988

In celebration of the Rev. Louis Launhardt's 30 years in ministry, the board of directors of Concordia Seminary arranges for a classmate and friend of the pastor to speak at Sunday services; the Rev. Floyd Spree and Launhardt graduated from Concordia in 1958.

The Down Spout restaurant opened recently on Highway 61, between Cape Girardeau and Jackson; the restaurant will feature barbecue and Mexican food; it is owned by Doris Bartle.

1963

Tom Powers, innkeeper, announces the Holiday Inn of Cape Girardeau, at Interstate 55 and Gordonville Road, will hold its grand opening and open house Saturday and Sunday; the two-day celebration will begin with a German Travel Festival.

Former outstanding State College halfback Gene McClanahan of Kirkwood, Mo., has been offered the head football coaching job at Chaffee [Mo.] High School to replace Jack Taylor, who has resigned.

1938

Memorial Day services are held at Fort D with the largest crowd in many years attending; principal speaker is the Rev. C.H. Morton, pastor of the Presbyterian Church; the only remaining Civil War veteran in Cape Girardeau known to the Sons of Veterans -- Peter Niswonger -- is present at the ceremony.

Twenty-five years of activity, dating from a pioneer venture in women's club work, are celebrated by the Cane Creek Homemakers Club at the Cane Creek School on Highway 34 west of Jackson; the little school, nestled in a grove of trees, is crowded to capacity and many people stand on the grounds.

1913

The Pain fireworks spectacle "Old Mexico -- 1847" is proving to be a popular feature of the Elks convention; so much so, in fact, arrangements have been made to hold an extra performance of the show at the fairgrounds tomorrow night in honor of all the old soldiers and in commemoration of Decoration Day.

Nine students of Lincoln School received diplomas Tuesday night at the commencement exercises at the courthouse here; the graduates are Uel G. Johnson, Lois O. Abernathy, Amos L. Chandley, Almira E. Dowdy, Iva E. Johnson, Lessie L. Yarbro, Erma I. Abernathy, Marie Primm and Susie C. Martin.
