The city council is being urged to delay action on a proposed stormwater management ordinance in favor of developing a comprehensive stormwater plan for the community; about 20 architects, engineers, developers, real estate agents and Cape LaCroix/Walker Creek Levee District officials offered that advice at a hearing on the proposed ordinance yesterday.

James A. Henderson, president and chief operating officer of Cummins Engine Co. Inc. of Columbus, Ind., is the featured speaker at the Southeast Missouri State University Copper Dome Society dinner.

50 years ago: May 29, 1962

A deep concern of many years has been resolved by Edith L. Caldwell of Cape Girardeau, who has had a stone erected to mark the 93-year-old grave of her grandfather, Judge Levi L. Lightner, in Old Lorimier Cemetery; erection of the marker was timed to coincide with the Memorial Day observance.

A small, single-engine plane, for which airport authorities across the nation had been alerted after it was stolen in Ontario, Canada, landed on the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau on Saturday night for refueling.

75 years ago: May 29, 1937

Plans are to open the city swimming pool at Fairground Park on Tuesday; because of the destruction by fire of the community park building, a temporary dressing room building has been built; the charge to swim will be from 10 to 25 cents, with children to have periods of free access to the pool.

Cape Girardeau County's two surviving Civil War veterans -- George W. Martin, 92, of Pocahontas and C.A. Wills, 90, of Oak Ridge -- will be given places of honor at Memorial Day services at Old Lorimier Cemetery tomorrow, if they are able to attend.

100 years ago: May 29, 1912

Eminent Commander Sam R. Stevenson, of the Ascalon Commandery of the Knights Templar, St. Louis, suffers a broken leg as the Templar parade starts to move south on Spanish Street; Stevenson, mounted on a fractious horse, is thrown to the pavement when the animal rears with him.

James Penn, a farmer on the Bend Road north of Cape Girardeau, brings some strawberries to The Daily Republican office that are prize-winners, being very large and of excellent flavor.
