Local, state and federal officials were on hand at a public meeting here last night to discuss Cape Girardeau's storm water problems; at the urging of local drainage district officials, the City Council will consider placing a $8 million bond issue before voters later this year to help finance flood-control projects.

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Farm activist Wayne Cryts, a Democratic candidate for Missouri's 8th District congressional seat, kicked off his campaign yesterday with two fundraisers in Sikeston.

50 years ago: May 29, 1961

Judge Roy W. Harper signs an order in Federal District Court selling the elevator and other properties of the Federal Grain Co. at Olive Branch, Ill., to Joel A. Montgomery of Sikeston, Mo.

The rebuilt Common Pleas Courthouse and the Cape County Historical Society museum on the second floor drew hundreds of visitors at an open house yesterday; Mrs. Arthur Thilenius says a guest book in the museum showed 440 people registered, not including children.

75 years ago: May 29, 1936

Collection of garbage under Cape Girardeau's new program will begin next month; two trucks will be placed into service; two new Dodge trucks have been ordered; one will be used in collecting garbage, while the other will be converted for use as a pumper firetruck; the fire department's old pumper will be transformed into a garbage truck.

Adelaide "Ma" Kopper, who has operated rooming and boarding houses at 116 and 119 Themis St., for 28 years, is retiring as cook; she has informed her roomers that she will keep them under shelter, but they will have to feed themselves elsewhere.

100 years ago: May 29, 1911

Dissension has arisen among owners of the Southeast Missouri Motor Car Co., which has resulted in a division of the firm; Edgar P. Rowe of Charleston, Mo., is out; J.W. Phillips and George McBride have taken over his interests; Acy Shirrell, mechanic, has moved his equipment to a vacant shop on upper Broadway.

Broadway, with its long stretch of pavement, offers a splendid race course; two young Girardeans -- Magnus Dempsey and Palmer Oliver -- had a go at their own version of a chariot race last night, before being stopped by patrolman G.W. Talley.
