A Reagan administration plan to eliminate the federal revenue sharing program later this year would mean the loss of more than $700,000 in annual revenue for the city of Cape Girardeau, much of which is used to finance trash collection and disposal operations.

ORAN, Mo. -- Longtime Oran elementary school principal Dorothy Griffin is retiring at the end of this school year, ending a teaching career which included rural two-room schools in Bell City, Oran and Vanduser, Mo.; she has been involved in education 39 years, the last 20 as the principal at Oran.

50 years ago: May 29, 1960

Aviation in Cape Girardeau receives the salute of thousands when the expanded Municipal Airport is formally rededicated in ceremonies companion to an open house; central attraction for visitors is the new, $90,000 terminal building housing field offices and the extensive equipment of the Federal Aviation Agency's flight station.

Jim Russell of Cape Girardeau has been selected as one of 15 players to be awarded a letter in baseball on the University of Missouri varsity squad.

75 years ago: May 29, 1935

Formal application is filed by County Director Mac Hunter with the state Federal Emergency Relief Administration office in Jefferson City for approval of the proposed South Main Street extension project; this follows a decision of the City Council yesterday to proceed with the project after the council had been called on by a committee of Main Street business men asking that the work be done immediately.

Eleven Girardeans, one from Jackson and one from Oriole make up three car loads of men who leave in the afternoon for Indianapolis, Ind., to attend the Memorial Day 500-mile automobile race; among those making the trip in Ford V-8 cars furnished by the Groves Motor Co., are Glenn Kinder, A.E. Uelsmann, Paul Vandivort, Alfred Firsch, Garland Fronabarger and Henry Loos.

100 years ago: May 29, 1910

With the baccalaureate sermon being preached at the Normal School auditorium today, several churches in town suspend their usual morning services, and congregations attend the Normal exercises instead; preaching the sermon is Dr. J.A. Thompson of Tarkio College.

Members of Walnut Camp, No. 134, Woodmen of the World, unveil monuments of Sovereign H.M. Ivy and Adolph Kraft during ceremonies at Lorimier Cemetery in the afternoon; Lafayette Groves also unveils the monument of Mrs. Mary M. Herrell, late state deputy of the Woodman Circle.
