Several hundred youngsters, some of who wait in line two hours, are on hand at the Arena Building for opening day sign-ups in the city recreation department's summer program; the program includes sports, crafts and other activities.

State Rep. LeRoy Braungardt of Moscow Mills, Mo., a Democratic candidate for Missouri lieutenant governor, is in Cape Girardeau to meet with his supporters; his opponent is state Sen. Harriet Woods of St. Louis.

50 years ago: May 29, 1959

KELSO, Mo. -- A benefit softball game will be played here this evening between former stars and present players, with proceeds going to help defray the expenses of the Kelso Ball Club; playing for the "old-timers" will be Butch Heisserer, Jack Smith, Virgil Hopkins, Charles and Jim Drury, Gilbert Logel, Joe Schwartz, Hahsie Essner, Henry Dumey, Jim Reinagel, Paul Diebold and Bud Drury.

Two articles of incorporation were filed for record yesterday at Jackson: Stovall & Williams Development Corp., 320 Broadway, and Sunny Hill Mobile Feed Service, 600 Good Hope St., both in Cape Girardeau.

75 years ago: May 29, 1934

Workers begin razing the building at the southwest corner of the intersection of Main and Independence streets, and another building will be erected there to house a gasoline filling station and automobile tire sales department by the Airline Oil Co.; the building being torn down formerly housed the Terminal Restaurant, owned by Angelo Moll.

Rockwood Park, a city-owned tract lying between North Henderson Avenue and West End Boulevard and north of Rockwood Drive, is ready for further development; workers have finished a two-week task of clearing away underbrush and cutting weeds.

100 years ago: May 29, 1909

Bishop E.R. Hendrix, who will preach the baccalaureate sermon for the graduating class of the Normal School tomorrow morning, arrives on the afternoon train from Memphis, Tenn.; while here, he is the guest of Louis Houck.

The enterprising meat market firm of A.H. Mueller & Co. of Broadway will soon put in a new shop in the building now occupied by Kraft Bakery.
