Irate over skyrocketing diesel fuel prices, truck drivers throughout Midwest block fuel pumps at stations along major routes, claiming they won't leave until prices come down or at least stabilize; along Interstate 55, rigs block pumps at Rhodes City Truck Plaza south of Cape Girardeau, Scotties Truck Stop near Sikeston, Robin Hood Circle near Pevely and J and N Truck Plaza near Ozora.

Justin, Texas, man escapes injury in afternoon when his single-engine Cessna 182 airplane stalls shortly after takeoff from municipal airport and crash-lands in field; pilot, L.E. Clark, walks away from mishap uninjured.

50 years ago: May 29, 1954

Motorists traveling Mississippi River bridge may have wondered what huge rock pile may be up on hill in front of St. Vincent's College; boys attending Catholic seminary are building outdoor shrine, or grotto, as place of worship in honor of Blessed Virgin Mother; shrine will be 25 feet high, 55 feet wide and encircled with waist-high retaining wall.

Central High Tigers defeat St. Louis Lutheran High Crusaders 5-4 to claim state baseball championship at Busch Stadium.

75 years ago: May 29, 1929

Indicative of improvement in shoe-manufacturing business and in general business conditions, employees of International Shoe Co.'s plant in Cape Girardeau are working a day longer than formerly; 1,200 of them are busy five and a half days of week.

Southeast Missouri Lumber Co. and Riverside Lumber Co., two retail lumber concerns controlled by Himmelberger interests, have been individualized; first concern is retained by Himmelbergers, while other has been bought by William J. Kies.
