Navy sailor died yesterday of burns he suffered when parked car he was in caught fire in first block of North Main Street; Seaman Mark Singleton, 20, of Great Lakes, Ill., died at St. John Mercy Medical Center in Creve Couer; Singleton would have been 21 tomorrow.
Perryville - Perryville School District officials have decided to ask voters second time to approve $4.9 million bond issue to fund improvements in school buildings; measure was narrowly defeated along with proposed increase in school tax rate in April; school officials say they have little choice but to resubmit bond issue because school buildings still need to be expanded and improved.

Lighthouse Bible Baptist Church observes Old-Fashion Day; congregation dresses part, with ladies dressed in bonnets and bustles and men in overalls and straw hats; dinner on church grounds is held in afternoon, and in evening old-fashion testimony meeting by lantern light is held; pastor is the Rev. Jack Strickland.
Annual Memorial Service is held at Hobbs Chapel in morning; the Rev. J. Edgar Isbell, retired Methodist Minister, conducts memorial service; basket fellowship dinner follows.
50 years ago: May 29, 1952
Fish stranded in borrow pits in Mississippi County as result of recent flooding are being rescued in joint effort of Missouri State Conservation Commission and Cape Girardeau County Chapter, Conservation Federation of Missouri; rough fish are being returned to river, and game fish are being taken to lakes, ponds and streams, where there is assured water supply and where fish will be accessible to public.
Edward L. Downs, who will retire Saturday as city attorney, announces his appointment, retroactive to April 1 as assistant Missouri attorney general to handle cases arising in this area.
75 years ago: May 29, 1927
With negotiations for lot to be probable site for new church to be closed soon, congregation of Grace Methodist Church is extending its efforts to inaugurate campaign which will eventually lead to construction of new church edifice; official church board has voted to purchase lot at northwest corner of Good Hope and West End Boulevard, to be used as possible building site.
Cape Girardeau churches suspend evening services to join in baccalaureate services for graduating class of Central High School; exercises are held at Centenary Methodist Church, and sermon is delivered by the Rev. J.P. Scruggs, pastor of First Baptist Church. - Sharon K. Sanders
