NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Six Southeast Missouri Scouters received the Silver Beaver Award last night during the annual business meeting of the Southeast Missouri Boy Scout Council: Rush H. Limbaugh Sr., James E. Grebing and William Wickham, all of Cape Girardeau; Betty Wills of Jackson Route 4; John Braswell of Kennett, Mo., and Jon Daniel of Fredericktown, Mo.

Dr. Eugene B. Elliott, president of Eastern Michigan University of Ypsilanti, Mich., is the commencement speaker for the State College graduation exercises; 337 students are conferred degrees in the 89th commencement ceremony at Houck Field House.

A subdivision developer's efforts to clear the zoning obstacle from the way of an apartment house project again collides with opposition; conducting its second hearing on the proposed zoning change for 54 lots in Camelot Terrace Subdivision, the city council hears protests from a number of nearby residents and property owners.

A week ahead of normal, the harvest of grain crops has been started in the various Southeast Missouri counties; crops being put into the shock include barley and some early varieties of wheat.

Baseball fans are looking forward to the Capahas-Bell City, Mo., match-up Sunday; Bell City has a 17-year-old hurler -- Carl Foster -- who is earning a reputation as a fastball pitcher; at 6 feet 4 inches and 195 pounds, Foster is still growing, but is already under contract with the St. Louis Browns.

1913

With the finest weather that a convention or celebration of any kind could desire, the annual Elk convention begins in the morning with the arrival of two boats from St. Louis; in the evening, delegates and local citizenry gather at the fairgrounds to take in the "Old Mexico" spectacle.

A gang of 15 Elks from Carthage, Mo., is attracting considerable attention; they are decked out in the local Elk colors and wear purple fezzes.
