25 years ago: May 27, 1987

The numbers are "persuasive" concerning the financial feasibility of the city of Cape Girardeau acquiring the utilities here, says Peter Bergerson, chairman of a citizens utility committee; however, a spokesman for Union Electric says the utilities his company operates here are not for sale.

The strategic planning committee members meet for the first time in the evening; the 10-member committee of business and civic leaders was appointed by the city council to direct the development of a long-range plan for Cape Girardeau.

50 years ago: May 27, 1962

Rabbi James A. Wax of Temple Israel in Memphis, Tenn., a graduate of State College, delivers the sermon at the college baccalaureate service in Academic Auditorium; a record 277 students will receive their diplomas at tomorrow's graduation ceremony.

Around 500 people are on hand for the formal dedication of the Otahki memorial monument at Trail of Tears State Park in the afternoon under threatening skies; C.W. Boutin cuts the ribbon dedicating the shrine.

75 years ago: May 27, 1937

Following a conference between officials of State College and St. Louis University, it is probable that a seismograph station will be established at the college here, one of three vital points in the Mississippi Valley earthquake area.

Superintendent L.J. Schultz says about 350 boys and girls have reported for participation in the music and recreation program sponsored by the school board; the outdoor play will be organized by Louis Muegge, while Frieda Rieck will conduct morning music classes at Central High School and William A. Shivelbine during the afternoons.

100 years ago: May 27, 1912

Two parochial picnics are held today; the pupils of the Lutheran Sunday school and the parochial school are picnicking at the fairgrounds, while the pupils of St. Mary's are enjoying the day at the school grounds.

Pauline Graessle has returned home to Cape Girardeau from Caruthersville, Mo., where she has been teaching for the past year; Graessle reports a successful term and will teach there again next year.
