Union employees of the Florsheim Shoe Co. plant, Highway 74 and South West End Boulevard, stage what they call a wildcat strike, saying it is in protest of several workers being suspended as a result of their actions following a bomb threat hoax at the plant Friday.

Faced with certain refusal by the Jackson Board of Education, the Jackson Community Teachers Association decided not to submit a 10 percent across-the-board pay increase proposal at last night's board meeting.

50 years ago: May 27, 1956

Plans have been completed for the testimonial dinner to be held Tuesday evening in Memorial Hall at State College, honoring Bishop Ivan Lee Holt of St. Louis, who will retire on July 1 as active bishop of the Methodist Church in Missouri, and Mrs. Holt; the event is under the sponsorship of the Methodist Church, Cape Girardeau District; Holt has served as a bishop since 1938.

The Emmanuel Evangelical and Reformed Church in Jackson observes its annual mission festival; the Rev. J.C. Koenig, furloughed missionary from India, speaks in the morning and afternoon.

75 years ago: May 27, 1931

Ten members are added to the roll of The Missourian's Century Club, including possibly the oldest resident of Cape Girardeau County; that senior member, Louis Bodine of near Oriole, is 98 years old.

Contracts for a swimming pool and filtering plant at the Country Club have been awarded; A.H. Gerhardt and Son received the general contract for construction, W.H. Meystedt for plumbing, and the Electric Supply Co. of Cape Girardeau for electrical equipment; A.F. Lindsay is the architect.

100 years ago: May 27, 1906

The Sunday school of the Presbyterian church is starting upon the foundation of a library that may some day be a large one; last week, 90 fine volumes were received from a publishing house; the books are being purchased with funds raised by the Sunday School.

The rite of confirmation is performed at Trinity Lutheran Church; those confirmed are H.W. Schrader, A.L. Kempe, W.M. Toellner, W.A. Reichwein, C.E. Vogel, A.G. Mussbach, Ed A. Polack, H.A. Sander, A.W. Schlegel, Irene Jones, Clara Hartung, Frieda Siemers, Antonie Brandes, Louise Moeder, Lena Desselmann and Rowena Sander.
