The Joint Veterans Council sponsors its annual Memorial Day service at Cape County Park; keynote speaker is 8th District Rep. Bill Emerson of Cape Girardeau.

Cardinal Bernard Law, archbishop of Boston and fourth bishop of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, visits his former diocese as he celebrates the first anniversary of his appointment to the College of Cardinals; he presides at an evening Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral.

50 years ago: May 26, 1961

The final performance of the Kiwanis Club's "Fabulous Follies '61" is presented at the State College auditorium; cast standouts are Mary F. Kinder, Marian Young, Catherine Lange and Millie Limbaugh, the Mamanettes -- Virginia Boren, Virginia Hill and Pat Blackwell, Crawford McClue, Bill Rader and Dr. Gordon Nunnelly.

Coach Weldon Hager's Central High Tigers concluded their baseball season with a 15-3 record; senior center fielder Gary Spradling and junior pitching ace Steve Mosley proved to be two big factors in the successful season.

75 years ago: May 26, 1936

Loot estimated at more than $75, including some receipts, parcels and stamps, is taken in a burglary at the Fornfelt post office and the Missouri Utilities Co. office four doors away.

The 1936 edition of the Capahas will make its debut Sunday, playing the Marion, Ill., club at Mahy's Park on U.S. 61; Caps manager is Marvin Gockel; players include Elam Vangilder, Lou Weiss, Carl Meyer, Phil Pipkin, Joe Delassus, Freddy Brinkopf, Johnny Hunze, Clyde Schwab, Billy Crabtree, Stein Hinton, Chet Saff, Homer Proffer, Ed Mosley, Benny Brinkopf, Lynn Crafton, Louis Bona, Bobby Bauer, Don Pritchard and Tubby Koch.

100 years ago: May 26, 1911

As Alvin Cotner of the Hope-Cotner garage filled the gasoline tank of a Ford runabout last night, there was a flare-up, sending burning liquid all over Cotner; his cries for help were answered by the boys of Company K, who were holding their weekly drills in the armory above the garage; aside from rescuing the burning man, the soldiers kept in mind the 6,000 rounds of ammunition stored in the armory immediately above their heads.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Nabe returned yesterday from St. Louis; today they go to their old farm out on the Perryville Road to take up life there after having lived in St. Louis for some time.
