City employees, including administrative personnel, will receive a pay raise of sorts in the coming fiscal year, although their salaries won't be going up; the city of Cape Girardeau plans to pick up employee costs of a retirement program.

Gov. John Ashcroft brings his "Buy AgriMissouri" tour to Scott City, visiting the Christmas tree farm of Mike and Joanie Gunther.

1963

In rain-soaked Fairgrounds Park in St. Louis, University City defeats Cape Girardeau Central High for the Missouri State High School Baseball Championship, 6-3; while the Tigers out hit their opponents, the team from University City repeatedly makes the big plays that earns it the title.

The Missouri State Jaycees Convention, the first held here since 1937, swings into its second day with meetings at the National Guard Armory for men and at the Colonial Restaurant for the Jaycee wives; a banquet is held in the evening at the Arena Building

1938

OLD APPLETON, Mo. -- Unconfirmed reports here are that the local brewery is to be closed as soon as the surplus stock is sold, and the machinery, beer vats and other equipment moved to Marionville, Mo., where B.H. McGovern is to open and operate another brewery; the last beer was said to have been brewed here last week; the Old Appleton brewery dates back to the Civil War.

Frank A. Lowry, former city counselor, announces he will be a candidate in the August primary for the Republican nomination for state representative.

The graduation exercises of the Jackson High School will be held Monday evening at the Gem Theater; only four will graduate this year and all are girls: Elsie Hoffmeister, Helen Grant, Julia Reed and Elizabeth Granger.

Mrs. Mary Bueltemann, mother of Charles and Ben Bueltemann, well-known citizens, died last night at the age of 84; she came to Cape Girardeau from Wohldenburg, Hanover, Germany, in 1853, and spent her entire life here.
