The Cape Girardeau City Council sets June 26 as the date for the public housing election; the vote will decide whether Cape Girardeau is to have low-cost public housing.

State College has issued an order to A.B. Newton Construction Co., of Vidalia, Ga., to begin construction of six new dormitories by Monday; the dorms are expected to be complete by the start of the fall semester in 1963.

75 years ago: May 24, 1937

With 45 men working, the Lorimier School construction job is moving forward, the exterior taking shape rapidly; framework for the roof over the west wing, which covers the gymnasium, is being placed at present.

Missouri General Utilities Co. has completed the work of erecting poles for the high line from Grand Tower, Ill., to Oak Ridge via New Wells, Shawneetown and Pocahontas; stringing the wires for the electric transmission will begin soon.

100 years ago: May 24, 1912

Mrs. H.A. Kenley, 130 S. Sprigg St., is deeply grieved at the loss of a valuable Durham cow that was poisoned by someone last night; she is offering a $100 reward for the apprehension of the poisoner.

The Daily Republican has received two letters from residents who say they have been disturbed by the conduct of the people who live in the Central Inn building, across the street from the police station; one letter states the saloon there stays open on Sundays, while the other said a gang indulged in a long craps game in front of the saloon last Sunday morning.
