25 years ago: May 23, 1984

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- A sometimes-bitter dispute over the hiring of a new superintendent for the Perryville School District, which had led to the division of the district's board, comes to a head with the resignation of two board members, Orville Schaefer and Dale Thieret.

The Notre Dame Bulldogs pull off a seventh-inning comeback to advance to the finals of the state Class 2A baseball tournament in Columbia, Mo.; the Bulldogs score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to record a 6-5 win over Brentwood.

50 years ago: May 23, 1959

The annual get-together of victims caught in the Airline establishment on U.S. 61 at the time it was demolished by the tornado, which struck Cape Girardeau on May 21, 1949, was held last evening at the rebuilt Airline; Mrs. Raymond Brady hosted the dinner event; only four of the original 19 victims were present: Mrs. Annabelle Ruebel, Mrs. Lois Atchley Myer, Mrs. Brady and Fred Hartle.

Southeast Missouri Lumber Co., marking a high point in its 54-year history, holds an open house in its modern new quarters at 411 Jefferson Ave.

75 years ago: May 23, 1934

A few men were busy yesterday doing preliminary work where bridges are to be constructed on the South Sprigg Street paving project; the contractor, E.L. Markham, has sublet construction of bridges to Carl Richmond of Advance, Mo.

A long-term lease has been signed between the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. and Jake Pollack, owner of a two-story building at 28 N. Main St., and the grocery firm is to soon begin rebuilding and adding to the structure to install a large store.

100 years ago: May 23, 1909

The Rev. A. Wilder being away from the city preaching at Doniphan, Mo., his pulpit at Trinity Lutheran Church is filled by the Rev. George Kirshke of Hanover Lutheran Church.

The Christian Church Bible school and congregation meet in the morning at the church and, after Sunday school exercises and the taking of communion by members, are transported to the old fairgrounds, where church services are held on the grassy slope on the south side of the old race track.
