Larry Wilcox, formerly officer Jon Baker on the television series "CHiPS," is in Cape Girardeau attending the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships; Wilcox, who has his own movie production company, is shooting footage of Marlene Harmon, an athlete from Cal State-Northridge.

Ground-breaking ceremonies were held yesterday for two buildings on the State College campus; professor J. Clyde Brandt, retired member of the music department, turned the first spade of earth for the music building; Rosina Koetting, head of the department of women's physical education, did the same honors for the other building.
A traffic officer has been stationed at the West End Boulevard-Broadway intersection the past two mornings to help move traffic along during morning rush hour.
75 years ago: May 23, 1933
LUTESVILLE, Mo. — Berthold Schrock, 89, generally regarded as the wealthiest man in Bollinger County, died last night; he was born in Germany, but came to Cape Girardeau County with his parents when he was 8 years old; at the age of 16 the family moved to Bollinger County.
Some of the Southern Illinois land that the governor has asked the federal government to use in creating two national forests lies directly opposite Cape Girardeau; the governor has said 5,000 men could be given work on the proposed Shawnee and Illinois national forest tracts.
100 years ago: May 23, 1908
J.H. Dorris, a well-known lawyer who came to Cape Girardeau several months ago to practice his profession, has finally consented to make the race for the Republican nomination for judge of the court of common pleas.
For a week, the Lyric theater has been closed while improvements were being made; the interior has been filled with electric fans; it will be the coolest place in town this summer.
